School Grants in Tennessee

To be eligible to receive Federal and state grants in Tennessee, it is a wise idea to ill out the FAFSA. The Tennessee state Lottery goes towards funding state education. The Education Lottery Program in Tennessee awards up to $3,800 each year. You must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and be enrolled at a state university of college to be eligible.

The Ned McWherter Scholars Program awards $6,000 per academic year to eligible Tennessee college students. You can apply starting your last year in high school in Tennessee. To be eligible, you need to have a 3.5 cumulative GPA. You also need to attend a Tennessee college or university full-time. You have a better chance of receiving the Ned McWherter Scholars Program award if you have gotten extra credit by taking some honors courses or Advanced Placement courses in high school. You need to have a 29 composite score or higher on the ACT, or you need to have a 1280 on the SAT with the math and critical reading. When you apply for this award, you need to submit your official transcripts from your high school. This award may be renewed, with the total period of time up to four years of study. You need to keep up a 3.2 cumulative GPA in college, and you need to attend college on a full-time basis. Apply through the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation. Applications can be submitted by Feb. 15th of each year.

The Tennessee Teaching Scholars Program was designed to encourage prospective teachers to pursue their education and to have them teach in Tennessee after graduation from college. You may receive an award in your junior or senior year of college. You must be a resident of Tennessee. You also need to have a 2.75 cumulative GPA in college in the teacher education program. You need to be enrolled full-time as an undergraduate student, or you need to be enrolled half-time if you are a graduate student. You need to be a first-time bachelor’s degree student that has not already become a licensed teacher. The catch is: you have an obligation to teach at a Pre-K through 12 grade classroom in Tennessee for one year after graduation; otherwise, you will have to repay the funds received.

You can get an application at the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation. You application needs to include a letter of recommendation from one of your professors in college in your teaching program. You also need official university transcripts that show the standardized test scores for the exams for the teacher education program. You need to keep up a 2.75 GPA in order to be eligible or these funds under this program.
