Do you need money for college? Well, there are many programs available as well as school grants in Washington. Washington students can get up to $6,876 on a need-basis for college after they have filled out the FAFSA through the Washington State Need Grant. You need to attend a public, private, or vocational school within the state of Washington in order to be eligible for these funds.
You can get up to $6,840 in funds for college under the Washington Scholars program. The way students are chosen for this program is that high school seniors are nominated by high school principals. You need to be in the top 1% of your graduating class with respect to academic merit.
Those nominated by principals have their candidate applications sent to the Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board (HECB) by January of each year. Awards are give in mid-March of each year. To be eligible, you need to be a Washington state resident. You need to be graduating from a Washington private or public high school in the year awards are handed out. You need to enroll in a Washington college or university. And you can’t pursue a bachelor’s degree in theology.
The actual award amount you may be able to get varies according to the type of college you attend. For example, the maximum award at Washington State University and independent colleges and universities is $6,840.
However, the maximum award amount at the University of Washington is $6,718. The maximum award amount at Central Washington University is $4,963. The maximum award amount at Eastern Washington University is $4,806. The maximum award amount at the Evergreen State College is $4,872. The maximum award amount at Western Washington University is $4,857. Yet, the maximum award amount at community colleges in Washington is only $2,633. If you plan to become a health care professional, then you may be able to get a Health Professional Scholarship so that you can practice in critical shortage areas in Washington state. Financial assistance will help cover the costs of getting your education to pursue the following professions: 1) Medical Doctor; 2) Nurse; 3) Nurse Faculty to teach undergraduate nursing; 4) Midwife (certified-nurse or licensed); 4) Pharmacist; 5) Dentist; or 6) Dental Hygienist. However, mental health or psychiatrist is not included in this program.
The obligation that the students will have who receive financial assistance is that the students need to work in rural or shortage urban areas in a medical profession for three years after graduation. SPIE: The International Society for Optical Engineering
The SPIE grant is for both undergraduate as well as graduate students who are enrolled on a full-time basis in Imaging, Optics, Phototonics, Optoelectronics or a related field. The amount of the grant awarded to individual students ranges from $1,000 to $10,000. Students must use their grant money at a postsecondary institution during the academic year that they are approved for the funds.
Washington State PTA Grant
The Washington State PTA Grant is open to state residents who are seniors in high school or recent high school graduates who are preparing to become freshmen at accredited colleges, universities, community colleges, vocational/technical schools or other types of postsecondary institutions.
Educational Opportunity Grant
Educational opportunity grants are yearly grants that applicants can apply for if they are financially needy and have reason to believe that they are not able to complete their bachelor’s degrees unless they have some financial help to do so. This is where the Educational Opportunity Grant comes into play. Those who apply for this school grant must be residents of the state of Washington. They also must have completed two years of college or university and must live in one of the designated counties. The eligible applicant must be a person who is not able to continue their schooling because of family commitments, work commitments, monetary needs or health concerns.
Washington Award for Vocational Excellence Grant
The Washington Award for Vocational Excellence Grant is awarded to honor three vocational students from each one of the 49 legislative districts in the state. The grant money covers up to two years of tuition for undergraduate students. Those who apply for this grant must be enrolled in a high school in the state of Washington, a skills center or a technical college at the time that the application is submitted.
