School Grants In Rhode Island

by on

Even though Rhode Island is a small state, you can still find great opportunities for school grants and other financial aid for college.
There are several state school grants in Rhode Island and scholarships available to Rhode Island residents through the Rhode Island Higher Education Assistance Authority.

One such scholarship is from The Rhode Island Foundation for Advertising/Communications, and the application can be found online at their website.

Another good scholarship is the J.D. Edsal Advertising Scholarship/Women’s Advertising Club Scholarship. To qualify for this scholarship, you need to: 1) study advertising as a college sophomore, junior, or senior; 2) be a Rhode Island resident; 3) pursue a career in advertising; and 4) have financial need.

Furthermore, the RDW Group, Inc. offers a Minority Scholarship for Communications. Qualified applicants for this scholarship must: 1) be a minority student and reside in Rhode Island; 2) show financial need; 3) study communications or computer graphics, or art, or dinematography as a undergraduate student or graduate student; and 4) plan to enter a career in advertising.

You can apply online for these scholarships through the Rhode Island Education Assistance Authority

You can receive up to $900 per year in grant money by applying for the Rhode Island State Grant Program by filling out the FAFSA. In order to be eligible for this grant you must meet the following rules:

1) you need to be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident; 2) be a Rhode Island resident; 3) enroll in a program leading to a first time undergraduate college degree or certificate; 4) be enrolled at least half-time; 5) not owe a refund on a previous grant; 6) make satisfactory academic progress; 7) register for selective service. Additionally, the FAFSA should be sent to the processing center before March 1st before the academic year you are applying for the grant. Furthermore, awards can be used at eligible colleges in the U.S.A, Canada, and Mexico. The award can be renewed for up to three years for a four year program, and it can be renewed for up to four years for a five year program.

You may be able to receive through the College Bound Fund Academic Promise Scholarship an amount of up to $2,500 per year over four years, up to a total of $10,000. Students in an eligible 5-year program may be able to get an additional year of funds. To be eligible you must: 1) be a full-time student at college; 2) show academic merit and maintain a 2.5 GPA in your first year, etc.; and 3) show financial need. The following formula is used to determine who will be selected (those with the highest selection index scores are more likely to be selected). Selection Index = ((5350 – EFC)/10) + SAT Score or Adjusted ACT Score. Note that EFC stands for Expected Family Contribution as determined by the FAFSA form. To apply, fill out the FAFSA, and take the SAT exam (or the ACT exam).

Rhode Island School Grants for 2011

Rhode Island is the smallest state in the U.S. but the quality of education found at its postsecondary institutions is every bit as good as it is in any of the other 49 states. There are a few education grants that those attending college or university in the state can apply for although the choices are less than those found in other parts of the country. It is the Rhode Island Higher Education Assistance Authority that provides grants to students wishing to attend post-secondary institutions. Here we take a look at the grant opportunities available to Rhode Island residents in 2011.

Rhode Island Higher Education Grant Program

Here is an education grant that is a little bit different than the majority of grants that are available. This school grant is for Rhode Island residents who are attending an approved post-secondary institution anywhere in the United States, Canada or Mexico. The Rhode Island Higher Education Grant Program is based upon financial need. This grant can be renewed for up to a period of four years if the student is in good to excellent academic standing. The grant can be used during the freshman year of school, sophomore year, junior or senior years.

Federal Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant is a grant that is available in every state. While it is a federal school grant it is administered at the state level in Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Higher Education Assistance Authority. These grants are the most common of all school grants and are the largest source of student financial aid. This grant is open to undergraduate students but not graduate students. Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need when they apply for this grant.

The amount of money that approved applicants will receive from the government  has to do with the cost of tuition at the student’s school of choice, the expected family contribution, the length of time that the student expects to attend school and finally whether the student will be attending school  on a full-time or part-time basis.  An applicant is only eligible to receive one Federal Pell Grant per school year.
