To apply for the Michigan Tuition Grant, you need to fill out the FAFSA. The FAFSA from can be found at: www.fafsa.ed.gov. You can get up to $1,610 per year (for up to ten semesters) in free money for college from the Michigan Tuition Grant. You must be an undergraduate Michigan resident who has financial need. Other eligibility requirements are that: you cannot be incarcerated; you must meet your college’s satisfactory academic progress policy; you must have a high school diploma; you must be enrolled at least half-time at an approved post secondary college or university in Michigan; you must be a resident of Michigan for one year prior to the academic year you plan to enroll in studies; and you must be a U.S. citizen, or permanent resident, or approved refugee; and you can’t be studying a degree in theology, divinity, or religious education. You may be eligible to get up to $2,000 in tuition assistance from the Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) in Michigan, if you had Medicaid coverage for 24 months within a 36- consecutive month period as verified by the Michigan Department of Human Services (DHS). The DHS verifies eligibility, then the Office of Scholarships and Grants (OSG) will send the student an acceptance form anytime between 6th grade and 12 grade. The acceptance form must be filled out by the student before graduating from high school and entering college. Students who receive a letter from OSG should also file the FAFSA, even though the FAFSA is not needed to establish TIP eligibility. If you are the son or daughter, natural or adopted, of a Michigan veteran, then you may be eligible to receive scholarship funds for a total of up to $11,200 over 4 years of study through the Children of Veterans Tuition Grant Act. You must be a full-time student in Michigan at an eligible post secondary institution to receive this amount. Half-time students will receive less. In the state of Michigan there are education grants you can apply for if you would like to go to college to better your life. Getting a college degree or diploma will put you in a better position to find a job that is fulfilling, challenging and will pay you a decent salary. Here we look at what two grant programs are new and improved in Michigan this year:
The Michigan Tuition Grant: This grant program is a state grant that is suitable for students who wish to attend independent colleges or universities in Michigan. This is a need-based grant that is available for both part-time as well as full-time students. Applicants must be residents of the state of Michigan and also must be permanent residents or citizens of the U.S. The money from this grant can be used to pay for tuition and education related fees. The amount awarded for this grant for 2012 is $2100. The deadline to apply for this grant is July 1st.
Grand Rapids Community Fund Grant: This grant program does not come from the state but comes from the Grand Rapids Community non-profit organization. It is a private grant that is awarded to students who want to attend college but who do not have the financial means to do so. Typically this grant is supplied to students who are attending or planning to attend Kent County schools in the state. The Grand Rapids Community Fund Grant is issued to approximately 60 students every year. The applications were available on January 1st and the deadline for the submission of applications is April 1st.
Anthony C. Fortunski, P.E. Memorial Grant
While not a brand new grant for the state of Michigan the Anthony C. Fortunski, P.E. Memorial Grant has not been around for a lengthy duration of time. This grant awards $2,000 to engineering students who show an interest in industry and manufacturing. Preference for this grant is given to students who are attending Lawrence Technical University and who are majoring in manufacturing engineering. Those who apply must be full-time post secondary students.
Grand Rapids Community Fund Grant
The Grand Rapids community has a not-for-profit organization that offers private grants to students who wish to go to college. Typically they offer grants to students who hail from Kent County schools. Approximately 60 competitive grants are offered by this organization. This is a need-based grant. Those who are the most in need of money to help them go to college or university make the best candidates for this grant.In summary, there are many ways to get free money for college and school grants in Michigan.
