If you are looking for student aid and forms of financial assistance to go to college then school and education grants can offer a stress-free means of helping to pay for your educational needs. As the cost of tuition and related expenses for schooling goes up students are coming to realize that they need help in paying for their post-secondary education.
Some of the best sources for school and education grants are available through the state and federal government. Some public and private companies also make grants available to students as do a selection of organizations. Many colleges and universities also have their own grants that they make available to a specific number of students who enroll in their school.
State government grants for college in 2012 are in most cases resident-based. That is to say that you must live in the state where you wish to go to school in if you wish to qualify for the grant. These grants are not just for students that make the top grades. There are need-based grants, grants for low income students, grants for disadvantaged individuals and grants for adults who wish to return to school. There are also grants for Native Americans, African Americans and Hispanics. There are also plenty of state grants that are geared towards women. There are grants for women with low incomes, grants for undergraduate studies, grants for military service, grants for graduate or doctoral studies and non-traditional grants.
The options are many and you should explore the grant opportunities available to you before you convince yourself that the only option is to take out student loans that will take you years to pay back. You never know how many grants you are eligible to apply for until you really start looking!
Let us look at two of the school and education grants for 2012:
Pell Grant
The Pell Grant is a grant offered by the Federal government to students who wish to attend college but do not have the funds available to do so. The economic circumstances of the student are the primary consideration in determining whether an individual is eligible to receive the Pell Grant. The gender, race, age or academic standing is not factors that the Federal government considers in regards to this grant. The same can be said about disability- it plays no role in whether the person is deemed qualified or not to receive money from this grant program.
The basic requirement for the Federal Pell Grant for 2012 is to have a high school diploma and to be able to prove financial need. This grant does not need to be repaid. The Education Department decides how much each student will receive. The maximum amount given to any student is $5,550. Full-time attendance in a college program is required to apply for this grant.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
The FSEOG comes from the Federal government and is for students wishing to study for their undergraduate degree. It is also for students who can show that they have an exceptional need for financial assistance. The priority for this grant is given to those who are receiving the Federal Pell Grant. This grant does not have to be paid back. Students at each college are awarded funds based upon how much money is available at each one of the schools. For this reason there is no guarantee that every student who qualifies for the FSEOG will receive it.
This grant does not have to be paid back. Students at each school are awarded money based upon the availability of funds at that particular school. Since funds are limited, there is no guarantee that every eligible student will be able to receive an FSEOG. Applications for this grant must be submitted before June 30, 2012.
